Mount Carmel's Past

Railroad Tracks

The tracks entered town at Seventh and Hickory Streets
Crossed 6th Street by the St. Joseph's Elementary School
Ran by the Lehigh depot at 5th and Market
Crossed 5th and Market diagonally
Cut across the middle of Chestnut Street
Ended along side the Stevens Elementary School on Walnut Street

The Town Park Area

Third Street and Lemon Alley bisected the area.
A school, likely elementary, sat on the Northwest quadrant.
The Antracite Fire Company was on the corner of the Southwest quadrant.
The High School at the corner of Market and Third was not yet constructed.

Marble Hall Hotel

The Dining Room at the corner of 3rd and Oak had to have been wonderfully elegant
The kitchen and the laundry sharing the same area is strange
Who would have been the users of the "Writing Room" adjacent to the dining area

Garfield Elementary School

The 6th Street school at Vine Street was later renamed for, presumably, president Garfield
There seems to be no photographs available for this school
The American Fire Company still occupies its 6th and Vine location

Southeast Mount Carmel

Cecelia Strike Hook grew up in Donahues Row, labeled "Company" on the map
There was a hosiery Factory on 6th Street between Locust and Plum Streets
The stone Central Park Hotel on Turnpike Street still stands
The Dance Pavilion next to the hotel must have been a wonerful spot for socializing
The corner of 6th and Walnut Streets is labeled as a saloon
The population of Mount Carmel was about 3,600 and so, there were few homes in the area
