Peter was congenial kind of guy who nevertheless did not hesitate to resort to physical force when confronted with a situation fraught with the need for dorceful retaliation. This incident, in March of 2015, was most likely the result of a provocation. Peter was 17 at the time so protraying him as a "man" may indicate there was some kind of bias in play on the part of the reporter. And the reporter could have stated that "it could not be learned what the 14 year old did to deserve the beating".

Early on Peter took a job in the coal mines an gets hurt in January, 1920. Attaching a mule harness to the side of a loaded coal car is referred to as a side hook .
Peter became a Mount Carmel police officer around 1930. Policing standards in those days included having officers carry a night stick as they walked their beat....and they were expected to use them to maintain the peace. Miscreants were well aware that a cracked skull was a real possibility should they choose to resist or ignore an officer's orders.

This 1940 census report shows Peter and his family of wife and three children living with his mother in her house on 7th Street in Mount Carmel. Peter's father had passed since the census of 1930 was taken.

By 1950 Peter's mother had died and his last child Carol Ann was born.
